Client Background

Customer: A major Welsh production facility Industry: Creative / Film Production Facilities Location: Wales

The production facility is a large, high‑occupancy site with extensive washroom facilities catering to staff, production crews, and visitors. High‑traffic environments like this are especially vulnerable to unnoticed water wastage.

Partners & Stakeholders

Thomas Dudley - supplier of the Kinetic Infrared Urinal Flush Control [Urinal Timer solution]
Ben Kehoe - Cartref Programme
Charlotte Harris - Water Efficiency Project Mgr.

The stakeholders collaborated to assess the issue, deploy the solution, and validate the results.

The Challenge
Prior to intervention, the facility was experiencing a continuous flow into its urinals, particularly during night hours when the buildings were unoccupied.

Pre‑installation monitoring revealed:

  • Nightline flow rate: 250 litres per hour (lph)

This meant water was being wasted at scale every hour the facility was closed. Continuous automatic flushing is a common issue in commercial washrooms and can result in thousands of litres of unnecessary water usage daily.

The Solution
To resolve this, five Kinetic Infrared Urinal Flush Controls were installed across the affected areas of the studio.

What the Kinetic does:
Regulate flushing intervals | Prevent continuous running | Operate only when needed | Reduce excessive water flow caused by ageing or faulty cistern systems

The installation process was non‑disruptive and completed efficiently, with immediate functional improvements observed.

Transforming night-time water waste into long-term savings

Results & Impact
Following the installation:
Flow rate reduced from 250 lph to 35 lph | Water saved: 250 lph | Equivalent daily saving: ~6,000 litres per day

This represents more than 2.19 million litres saved annually, assuming consistent usage patterns.

Operational Benefits:

  • No negative impact on washroom cleanliness
  • No disruption to staff or visitors
  • Long‑term reduction in water bills
  • Reduced environmental footprint

The installation addressed the issue immediately, transforming a high‑waste system into an efficient, controlled one.

Project Significance
This project forms part of a wider effort to support Welsh businesses in:

  • Cutting operational costs
  • Reducing environmental impact
  • Introducing simple, effective retrofit solutions

The facility now serves as a strong example demonstrating how straightforward interventions can reduce water consumption by thousands of litres each day.

Conclusion
The production facility urinal timer installation delivered dramatic, measurable improvements in water efficiency. By reducing night-time flows from 250 lph to just 35 lph, the project showcases the effectiveness of Kinetic Urinal Flush Controls in large commercial settings. With over 6,000 litres saved daily, the initiative highlights how simple, targeted solutions can generate meaningful environmental and financial benefits across the Welsh business community.
