Client Background
Customer: Local hospitality venue (Abergele)
Project: Abergele Smart Town - Water Efficiency Workstream
Primary Challenge: Reduce unnecessary urinal flushing and eliminate constant water flow. The business had unknowingly been experiencing ongoing water loss through a continuously running urinal flushing system, particularly during hours when the building was closed.
Partners & Stakeholders
- Thomas Dudley - supplier of the Kinetic Infrared Urinal Flush Control [Urinal Timer solution]
- Ben Kehoe - Cartref Programme
- Charlotte Harris - Water Efficiency Project Mgr.
The stakeholders collaborated to assess the issue, deploy the solution, and validate the results.
The Challenge
Pre‑installation analysis identified a continuous flow of 63 litres per hour (lph) entering the urinals, even during night time & closed periods.
This level of unnecessary flow represents:
- Increased utility costs
- Avoidable environmental impact
- Inefficient water system performance
The challenge was to deploy a reliable, low‑maintenance automated solution that reduced flushing without compromising hygiene.
The Solution
A Kinetic Infrared Urinal Flush Control was installed to regulate the flush mechanism within the automatic cisterns.
Key capabilities of the Kinetic include:
- Scheduled flush intervals
- Elimination of continuous water flow
- Operation only when needed
- No compromise on cleanliness or user experience
Technicians from the Smart Town project completed the installation and testing and monitored post‑installation data to verify performance.
A Simple Intervention. A Major Impact.
Results & Impact
Quantitative Outcomes
After installation, night time flow rates dropped from 63 lph to just 3 lph, a reduction of 60 lph.
This equates to:
1,440L saved per day | ~525,600L saved annually (0.5 million litres) | Significant operational cost savings | Reduced environmental footprint
Performance Validation
A pre‑ and post‑installation graph [below] clearly demonstrates the step‑change reduction in flow rates. The installation delivered instant, measurable improvement with no observed reduction in hygiene quality or system reliability.
Wider Programme Value
This project forms part of a broader Smart Town strategy to help Abergele businesses:
- Reduce operational costs
- Improve sustainability
- Adopt simple IoT‑enabled or automated technologies
- Demonstrate measurable environmental outcomes
The venue now serves as an early proof point that small efficiency interventions can deliver substantial, long‑term impact.
Conclusion
The urinal timer installation showcases how targeted water‑saving technologies can dramatically reduce unnecessary consumption. Through the collaboration of local programmes, technology partners, and the business itself, the
project delivered a 60 lph reduction and over half a million litres saved annually. This case study provides a strong, replicable
model for similar businesses across the Smart Town network.
